I am floating alone in the middle of an inky black lake, and above me glitters the light of seemingly infinite stars. For me, outer space is a spectacular reminder of shifting scales in the natural world. Since 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope has been creating stunning images of our universe using digital cameras and spectrographs that capture ultraviolet, infrared, and visible light. Through material explorations involving knitting, crochet, felting, and beading, Space Lenses seeks to capture the multi-coloured, multi-layered effects of the Hubble telescope’s photographs. Each piece aims to mimic a pattern found in Hubble’s images, from the bubbling effect of stars to the spirals of galaxies. These lenses can be viewed separately or layered over one another in various combinations in an effort to capture the shifting materiality of the universe.
